Abstract

First,​ consumer finance was mainly about digital wallets, whose key functions were payments and storing value. Then, gradually, they became financial operating systems so advanced that a person can manage their entire financial life through a single platform. Digital wallets have simply eased things but, at the same time, they have made financial experiences even more fragmented as users are forced to use different apps for payments, savings, investments, credit, financial planning, etc. Fragmentation leads to inefficiencies, confusion, and unfamiliarity with one's overall financial ‍​‌‍​‍‌status. To solve these challenges, the authors proposed a scheme for the consumer finance interfaces to be turned into the financial operating systems that are integrated and user-centered, tying together different financial services into one cohesive network. Interoperability, customization, and instant data sharing, the main features of the system, will empower users to manage, analyze, and enhance their financial decision-making capabilities within a single ‍​‌‍​‍‌environment. The paper is based on the examination of financial technologies and on comparing case studies of new "super apps" and neo banking ecosystems which already show changes that point to this kind of transition. The research works out the main design principles and technological facilitators needed for this transformation. According to the results, financial operating systems help in many ways on top of solving the problem of fragmentation, they also increase user interaction, trust, and understanding of financial matters by offering general information and practical advice. In summing up, the authors consider that it is not separate tools but integrated platforms that will serve as intelligent operating systems, drastically altering how people interact with and manage their money.
